Oslo Airport (OSL) has awarded the contract for a new baggage handling system as part of the future expansion of the airport to Vanderlande Industries. The total value for the contract for Vanderlande Industries is approximately €45 million, including a three-year contract for maintenance and operations.

The OSL expansion project comprises the construction of a new Terminal 2 (named Central Building 2), new taxiways and aircraft stands and a new pier (Pier B). It also comprises an extension to the existing Central Building 1, connecting it with the new Pier B.

Terminal 2 is planned to be developed in two phases. Phase one will be finished in 2016 and will increase the total capacity of the airport from 21 million passengers per year today to approximately 28 million passengers per year by 2016. Phase two, with a fully constructed terminal building and BHS, will be developed when required, to increase the total capacity to 35 million passengers per year.

The baggage in the new system will be transported from a flow-through check-in system at departure level in the Central Building 2 to the main baggage hall. After a primary sort by fully redundant Helixorter tilt tray sorters it passes several screening stages. Cleared baggage is transported from the main baggage hall to the new Pier B via a tunnel.

At the beginning of Pier B there will be a fully automated bagstore early bag storage system with 800 storage locations. The final sorting system in Pier B will also contain fully redundant Helixorters which sort to destinations. The BHS will be based on the latest low-energy Greenveyor conveyor technology, introduced by Vanderlande Industries during the Inter Airport Europe exhibition in Munich in October 2009.

Vanderlande Industries was awarded the contract over its two main competitors because it offered the best solution that resulted in the lowest lifecycle costs and optimal operational performance.

Since 1998 Vanderlande Industries has implemented and maintained one of the world’s first successful DCV systems at Oslo’s Terminal 1, and has performed several system extensions at the airport since.

In May 2009 the new baggage handling system for the Oslo Airport East extension was officially opened. This system comprises a check-in island with 14 check-in positions, hold baggage screening and a U-shaped tilted triplanar reclaim carousel. The sorting is based on Vanderlande’s new baxorter loop sorter, introduced in 2007, which is already operating successfully in several systems worldwide.
