Located 450km equidistant from the main capitals of the region - Belgrade, Budapest, Bucharest and Chisinau - the geographical position of Transylvania Targu Mures International Airport is one of its main advantages. The airport serves a region comprising Mures, Harghita and Covasna, and by parts of Bistrita, Brasov, Suceava and Sibiu, a population of around 2.7 million.
One of the goals of the airport is promoting the potential of the region it serves, and its services at national and European level, to become a factor in the economic development of Transylvania.
Targu Mures' flight schedule runs around-the-clock and provides complete airport services at international standards, with staff trained for domestic and international flights. It has an extended landing runway (2,100×45m), aircraft operating platform, category II ICAO installation of lighting for precise approaches, category II instrument landing system and high-performance low-visibility operations equipment that allows landing in reduced-visibility weather conditions.
Targu Mures wants to position itself in the air transport infrastructure market as an attractive low-cost airport for the entirety of Transylvania, while still being available for other forms of air traffic. This involves maintaining a maximum standard of quality and safety with minimal investment, a practice already in place at other European airports such as Luton and Stansted (London), Charleroi (Brussels), Hahn (Frankfurt) and Girona (Barcelona), all of which are frequently used by low-cost companies.
Currently, Targu Mures provides connections to the most important European cities and capitals - Brussels, Budapest, Dortmund, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Milan, Munich, Paris and Rome - and with Bucharest, the capital of Romania. For 2014, the airport management is aiming to attract new airlines and operators in order to develop routes for tourism, business or study.
