Mott MacDonald, Ramboll to design London Stansted Airport expansion

9 April 2018

A partnership of Mott MacDonald and Ramboll, together with architect Pascall+Watson (P+W), has been appointed as design engineers for new arrivals terminal and the redevelopment of the existing terminal at London Stansted Airport.

The Manchester Airports Group (MAG) owns and operates the London Stansted Airport and the redevelopment of the airport is part of the £600m transformation programme, reports World Construction Network.

The project comprises the development and delivery of P+W’s concept design for a 34,000m² arrivals terminal, which will relocate arrivals to a separate building. It will include larger immigration and baggage reclaim areas and new retail facilities.

The building will feature latest sustainable building technologies.

The existing building will be reconfigured into a departures-only terminal, which will include the expansion of check-in, security and retail areas, new airside coaching facility, aircraft stands, taxiway infrastructure and car parking facilities, creating more space at check-in, security and in the international departures lounge.

A public forecourt, with access to onward travel options, is expected to create a relaxing and welcoming environment for passengers.

The team will provide structural, civil engineering, building services, information and communication technology, specialist systems and airfield engineering.

Mott MacDonald will also provide enhanced project management office controls team, along with additional specialist input on constructability.

In 2015, MAG set out its vision to develop Stansted over the next 10 to 15 years to make best use of the existing single runway.

Subsequently, Stansted has submitted plans for the latest phase of MAG’s multi-million-pound transformation programme to create a purpose-built arrivals facility.

The £130m investment will be located adjacent to the current terminal building.

The project will also future-proof Stansted’s ability to make efficient use of the single runway serving around 43 million passengers a year.

Mott MacDonald’s aviation projects director Gary Howard said: “We’re delighted to be working with P+W and Ramboll on this hugely important project at London Stansted Airport.

“Our team has a shared vision and ethos for delivering the airport’s transformational programme, with proven experience of delivering projects in live airport environments.

“The redevelopment will support anticipated passenger growth and give users the high-quality facilities that they expect from an international airport.”
