ASA - Aeroportos e Segurança Aérea

Cabo Verde's strategic location off the west coast of Africa and its tropical weather has placed the country among the top tourist destinations over the past years. Located in the crossroads of the major air traffic flows between Europe and South America, and also between West Africa and North and Central America, Cabo Verde's rising economy is deeply anchored in tourism. This landscape makes ASA - Aeroportos e Segurança Aérea a key player in the air transportation sector.

As the company responsible for managing the country's seven airports, and 35 years since its creation, ASA is now at an important stage in its life cycle. Characterised by a strong and continuous commitment to technological development, the modernisation of its infrastructure and the training of its human resources, the company is making important strides in providing a better service. ASA is well positioned to gain the competitiveness and momentum needed to stay abreast of changes in air transport systems worldwide.

The airports in Cabo Verde have shown a steady increase in passenger traffic over the last few years. In 2018, Cabo Verde's airports registered a total of 2,702,232 passengers, representing an average annual growth rate of 10% when compared to 2015, with Amílcar Cabral International Airport on the Island of Sal, and Aristides Pereira International Airport on the Island of Boa Vista showing the most growth due to the strong and increasing tourism on these islands.

In order to respond to passenger demand and the tourism growth, ASA has made some significant strategic investments and partnerships, such as the common use and off airport check in, which optimises the operations and maximises passenger processing capacity.

Additionally, ASA recognises the importance of a travel air hub, and is working in close partnership with the country's flagship airline, Cabo Verde Airlines, in the implementation of the hub on the island of Sal in order to further develop its business. By continuing to offer competitive prices for airport fees, Amílcar Cabral International Airport will be well positioned to meet the changing demands. Furthermore, of the seven airports in Africa that can issue direct flights to the United States of America, Cabo Verde has two airports that are certified Last Point of Departure (LPD) - Amílcar Cabral International Airport (Sal) and Nelson Mandela International Airport (Praia).

In an effort to respond to the dynamic growth in the region and the country, ASA has an investment plan for 2018-2020 aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, developing and upgrading the airports' infrastructures and conditions in order to be better positioned in the global aviation market. The new competitive environment has also prompted the company to develop its non-aeronautical business providing new offerings at the major international airports while increasing passenger experience.
